The three trust systems your AI agent needs before it goes live
An AI agent that works in a demo but fails in production usually isn't missing better prompts. It's missing the three trust systems that make it safe to run without supervision: rules, memory, and recovery.
1. Rules — what it cannot do
Every agent needs a clear boundary of what it can and cannot do without asking. This isn't a content filter. It's an operational boundary — specific actions, specific data, specific types of decisions that require human approval.
The most common failure: agents that have too much access and too few rules. They work fine until they don't, and then they cause problems that take days to clean up.
2. Memory — what it knows and how to update it
Agents forget. Every interaction is a fresh context window unless you've explicitly built memory. The agents that work long-term have a structured way of storing what they've learned and updating it when reality changes.
3. Recovery — what happens when something goes wrong
Something will go wrong. An agent will encounter a situation it wasn't designed for, produce a bad output, or hit an error it doesn't know how to handle. Without a recovery system, it either freezes or continues with a degraded state. With a recovery system, it knows what to do — escalate, flag, revert, restart.
